Sodium Ethyl Xanthate Chemical appearance:

Sodium ethyl xanthate or SEX is typically a yellowish powder or pellet that is soluble in water. It is a xanthate based on the C2 alkyl ethyl alcohol in the sodium salt form.

Chemical application and strengths:

    • Sodium Ethyl Xanthate (SEX) serves as a flotation agent in the mining industry. Mining companies primarily use it as a collector, particularly in copper mining and the recovery of sulfide ores.

SEX can collect and promote the flotation of various activated or naturally hydrophobic minerals, including lead, cobalt, zinc, and nickel minerals. It interacts with metallic ions and can form insoluble compounds, increasing the hydrophobicity of the mineral surfaces and facilitating their separation from water.

Sodium Ethyl Xanthate plays an important role in froth flotation, where operators separate hydrophobic mineral particles from hydrophilic materials. The mining industry relies on this process to recover valuable sulfide ores. For ores such as copper, froth flotation can make the recovery of low-grade ores more economical and help mining companies reduce processing costs.

SEX acts as a highly effective and selective collector and is one of the stronger collectors in the xanthate family. Mining companies commonly use it for easily floatable and complex sulfide minerals, sometimes in combination with other sulfiding or activating reagents, depending on the characteristics of the ore.

SEX also serves as a precipitating agent in certain hydrometallurgical processes, including the treatment and refining of zinc electrolytes. In addition, manufacturers use it as a sulfidation promoter in rubber processing.

SEX works by forming a hydrophobic layer on mineral particles. The polar portion of the xanthate molecule attaches to the mineral surface, while the non-polar hydrocarbon portion faces outward and increases the particle’s hydrophobicity. Air bubbles then attach to the hydrophobic particles and carry them to the water surface, where operators collect them as froth. Operators generally require only a small amount of SEX to achieve effective mineral separation, although the optimum dosage depends on the ore and flotation conditions.
